Hamilton, Model 21 marine chronometer, fusee-drive with spring detent escapement and 56-hour winding indicator, original gimbaled brass tub set within a three tier brass bound mahogany box with Hamilton signature plate and serial number plaque to front, outer mahogany box with gilt Hamilton signature plate and serial number plaque to front, leather strap, silvered dial of approximately 4 inch diameter, KWKS, spring detent escapement with capped escape wheel, 14J, mono-metallic free-sprung balance with helical Elinvar hairspring, striped pattern nickel damascene, s#2E11289 with matching serial number to dial and to signature plaques of boxes. Comes with paperwork including four Hamilton factory timing certificates which are marked with the correctly matched serial number (two certificates are dated, to 1948 and 1960), a Hamilton factory service memo dated 1961 and which is marked with the correctly matched serial number, a warning certificate discussing proper handling of the instrument which is marked with the correctly matched serial number, and with several additional pieces of Hamilton paperwork as pictured. A top example throughout that is sure to please the discriminating Hamilton military collector, and we are pleased to note that this piece was fully serviced in spring of 2021.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, good winding indicator function, fully serviced in spring of 2021, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, few minimal micro-fine scratches; dial virtually flawless in visible portion with few small micro-fine scratches and very mild pinpoint marks, some typical edge rub under bezel; nearly mint hands; brass tub nearly mint with small scratch and some mild darkening to rear, good beveled glass crystal, gimbals excellent with good function and some darkening in areas; inner box excellent with good button latch functions, some mild exterior scratches, small area of abrasion to upper lid; outer box excellent with typical mild dings and scratches, areas of lacquer finish loss with the most notable being the high majority of top surface with only the lacquer finish of the area concealed below leather strap remaining, some bits of white paint on surface of right side, some thin slivers of separation to joints of upper portion of top lid, leather strap present though with wear and fraying which is most notable at its folding positions; paperwork as pictured ranging from items in excellent condition to items showing wear, tattering and discoloration.
